Summary of the Tujifunze Africa Foundation Annual Report 2023

Tujifunze Africa Foundation is a Community Based Organisation based in Kamuli District, dedicated to supporting children and young people in accessing quality inclusive education. The foundation’s vision is to create an Africa where all children and young people access quality education, thrive, and contribute to the development of their communities and the continent. Its mission is to increase access to education opportunities, retention, and completion for all children, while improving lifelong education outcomes through community and stakeholder collaboration.

Key Engagements and Activities in 2023

  1. CSW 67 Consultations: Tujifunze Africa held consultations with young women at Kyambogo University, capturing their experiences in accessing technology for education, and advocating for stronger inclusivity in educational technology.
  2. Sponsorship for Children with Disabilities: The foundation launched a sponsorship program in Kamuli District, supporting 15 children with disabilities to access education. The initiative started with fundraising efforts to sponsor 10 children.
  3. Podcast – The Education We Want: Launched in August 2023, this podcast engages the public in discussions about education, aiming to influence policy and promote a collaborative education sector.
  4. Literacy Day Engagements: In partnership with Youth Chaperon Uganda and Read To Learn, Tujifunze Africa organised a Literacy Event for over 170 children and youth in Kampala, including urban refugees, to improve literacy and numeracy skills.
  5. Girls CatchUp: This initiative trained girls on leadership and sexual reproductive health, empowering them to stay in school and take action on issues affecting them.
  6. Home Visits: The foundation conducted home visits to support families of pregnant girls and children with disabilities, providing educational interventions and linking pregnant girls to vocational training.
  7. Cricket 4 Development: Over 100 children were trained in cricket, using the sport as a tool to address school-related gender-based violence and promote safe learning environments.

National and International Engagements

  • Side Event on SDG4: Tujifunze Africa, in partnership with UNESCO and the Youth Coalition for SDGs, held a side event on advancing SDG4 in Uganda, showcasing best practices and fostering youth engagement in education policy.
  • 6th National Girl Summit to End Child Marriage: The foundation contributed to the summit, which aimed to end child marriage in Uganda, focusing on education and strengthening legal and cultural frameworks.
  • CSO Convention: Tujifunze Africa participated in the CSO Convention, advocating for flexible funding for youth-led organisations and intergenerational partnerships.
  • International SDG Summit: Tujifunze Africa participated in the UN SDG Summit 2023, where they shared insights on the need for inclusive early childhood education and trauma-centred approaches for survivors of sexual violence.
