The event was funded by Irise Institute East Africa, in partnership with the Foundation for a Just Society, to mark Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) Day. The goal was to raise awareness about menstrual health and hygiene, equip adolescent girls with crucial information on MHM, and document their experiences through a documentary for advocacy.

Activities Conducted:

  1. Menstrual Health Management Education
    • Method: Participants watched a UNICEF video on menstrual health management, followed by group discussions and knowledge-sharing.
    • Outcome: 30 girls gained increased knowledge about menstrual hygiene, which addressed existing knowledge gaps in Balawoli Sub-County.
  2. Documentation of Girls’ Experiences
    • Method: Each participant shared their menstrual experiences, which were recorded and compiled into a documentary.
    • Outcome: The documentary serves as an advocacy tool for menstrual justice, capturing the lived experiences of the girls.

Key Lessons Learned:

  • There is a knowledge gap about menstrual health among adolescent girls in rural communities, highlighting the need for ongoing training.
  • Engaging parents, teachers, and boys in MHM education is essential for breaking menstrual stigma and fostering a supportive environment.
  • WASH facilities (such as access to clean water and soap) are crucial for addressing period poverty, particularly in schools and rural areas.
  • Digital tools (like phones and laptops) are effective in disseminating MHM information and making learning more engaging for young people.
